carbonized bamboo flooringCarbonized bamboo flooring is put through a special process that darkens its color and changes some of the characteristics of the material. The process usually involves boiling, though there is some variation among how this is done. Bamboo flooring that has not been carbonized will have a very light color to it. This is not the aesthetic preference of some individuals, so carbonized bamboo was made to appeal to those who want a darker, more subtle natural bamboo color for their flooring. The way the materials are changed has an impact on their suitability for some locations.

Carbonized Bamboo Flooring Hardness

Carbonized bamboo is a bit softer than bamboo flooring that has not been put through the process. Most manufacturers describe the difference as between 20 and 30 percent. This means that carbonized bamboo floors are not as well-suited for very high traffic areas, or for areas where there will be considerable weight on the floor. This is true regardless of thickness (15mm being very common). Their darker tone, however, naturally disposes them to environments that are more relaxed, such as dens and home theater locations. There are other bamboo floor choices other than carbonized floors that work very well for high-traffic areas.

Woven bamboo flooring is constructed in a way that makes it very durable. In this process, the bamboo strips are boiled, as they are with carbonized bamboo flooring, but not to the same extent and not for the same purpose. After the bamboo has been dried out, several strips are compressed and bonded with an adhesive glue. The material that results offers a market increase in bamboo flooring durability. This type of bamboo flooring is usually prefinished and is a fine choice for high traffic areas, though damaging footwear such as hard-soled boots and high heel shoes should not be worn on any bamboo floors – or any hardwood flooring or laminate flooring , for that matter. You can also buy carbonized strand woven bamboo, which combines the two processes.

Manufacturers

carbonized bambooCarbonized and woven bamboo flooring are both very popular. Manufacturers such as Morning Star Bamboo generally manufacture both types, owing to the fact that clients may want one type for one part of their homes and the other for different rooms, or because clients may just generally prefer the look of one over another. The advantages of bamboo flooring are the same for either carbonized or woven bamboo flooring. This flooring does not attract dust or insects and is affordable. It has an attractive appearance and is very easy to clean. Bamboo is also an environmentally-friendly crop, typically harvested from the low mountains of China, which lends it additional appeal as a flooring product.

Carbonized bamboo can provide many years of service. Just make sure that you’re aware of it being softer than woven bamboo flooring. In the rooms where it is located, be sure that people either have their shoes off or that they at least wipe them off on a mat. With any flooring, dust, rocks and other debris stuck in the bottom of shoes can lead to significant scratching and gouging. Where spills are concerned, any type of bamboo flooring can be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth. You should be sure to keep harsh cleaners and abrasives away from carbonized bamboo flooring or any type of bamboo flooring.
